About Animations, yet again

Animation’s new studio album Reset Your Soul is out in the wild since yesterday and it is the only thing I’m listening to right now! The review should follow up soon, but before that I just wanted to let you all know that the complete album is still available on band’s MySpace profile.

Go ahead, make your own mind before I’ll write what I think about this release and why I absolutely love it!

Sunday mashup

Quite accidentally I’ve hit following clip on youtube today…

…and thought I’ll share this and a couple of other cool mashups I’ve heard recently. Enjoy it!

Animations to strike again

Well, after sometime waiting, Animations‘ second studio album Reset Your Soul–one of the releases I’ve been really looking for this year–is due early December. Just can’t wait! Although, it’s sad to see that no label showed enough interest in this amazing band to make a final deal with them. Yeap, it’s gonna be yet another self-released CD from Animations, but weep not cause I’m damn sure it’s gonna make a wonderful Christmas gift… from myself to myself.

The Whirlwind by Transatlantic

Transatlantic - The Whirlwind4 stars
Yes, I’ve been silent for some time now, but new Transatlantic CD is something I can’t pass by quietly. I mentioned this, at that time still upcoming, release back in April and now I hold it in my hand. The Whirlwind–because that’s the name of the album–is band’s third studio album, released eight years after Bridge Across Forever. To those who haven’t heard of the band before–is it even possible?–Transatlantic is a progressive super-group consisting of such a prog-stars as Neal Morse (ex-Spock’s Beard), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion).

Animated radio

Animations - Reset your SoulYesterday evening Kuba Dębski and Paweł Larysz from Animations were guests at Mały Leksykon Wielkich Zespołów (A Small Lexicon of Great Bands) show at Radio Alfa Kraków where they featured three complete songs from their upcoming album Reset Your Soul. Show’s setlist is available here and a complete recording here (dated 23.09.2009) and although the discussion was completely in Polish you will easily recognize Animations’ dynamic style when  Toxicyber, The Manhattan Project and Reset Your Soul were played.

The album is ready (recordings, artwork) and as soon as guys will finish contract talks it will be shipped out. Oh, and if you didn’t know already the band’s got a new, and hopefully permanent, vocalist.

Djabe at the Old Town square

Many years ago someone told me that there is a long process of maturation before you’ll start enjoying jazz music. For some time now, I thought about myself as a person whose musical taste had become mature enough to understand and appreciate some of the jazz performances. Couple of days ago I learned about a Jazz at the Old Town Square Festival and thought it might be interesting to see what is it all about, given that I’ve never been to any jazz gig before. Jazz at the Old Town Square Festival is an open air jazz festival taking place every summer here in Warsaw, Poland. It lasts for two months, presenting a different artist each Saturday evening. This year it started on July 4th and will continue till the August 29th.

The jazz festivities were initiated yesterday by a Hungarian fusion/world music band Djabe. The band was completely unknown to me–quite as every other name on the festival’s performers list–but after a visit to their website and hearing Doromb I became really excited about seeing them live and–oh boy–I was not leftdown. The band performance was absolutely amazing and Tamás Barabás quickly joined the ranks of my favorite bass players (and not only because of his excellent slapping). As for the other musicians, I think that many heavy metal drummers should be learning from Szilárd Banai’s fast and precise double bass drumming. Both Zoltán Kovács (keyboards) and Ferenc Kovács (violin, trumpet) gave a great performance as well and the only glitch was barely audible  sound of Attila Égerházi’s guitar which emerged only occasionally.

Nonetheless, I can say that Djabe made a great impression on me and left me expecting much of the festival itself. I can’t wait for the next Saturday’s performance by a “living legend” of Polish fusion/jazz rock scene, String Connection.

Dream Theater’s Rite of Passage

In yesterday Dream Theater’s newsletter Mark gave a very late notice that RoadRunner made available “A Rite of Passage” for download on May 6th only. “A Rite of Passage” is track #2 on Dream Theater’s upcoming Black Clouds & Silver Linings album (due Jun 23rd). I think I was one of the last persons that managed to grab the mp3 download before it disappeared, though the song should be available as a stream on RoadRunner site (and here it is on YouTube).

All I can say is if the whole Black Clouds & Silver Linings will be as much disappointing as “A Rite of Passage” is I’m not going to like this album. I’m wondering what’s more disappointing here, James LaBrie’s vocals, or maybe John Petrucci’s loosely Spastic Ink inspired solo, or maybe Jordan Rudes‘ lousy broken-synth effect?

I was going to buy a Deluxe Collector’s Edition Box Set but after listening to this I think I’ll go for a Standard Edition. I’m afraid it’s going to be another Octavarium, where out of all eight tracks I can only bear two.

The Never Ending Illusion by Daedalus

Daedalus - The Never Ending Illusion2 stars
The Never Ending Illusion is an Italian prog-metal band’s Daedalus second studio album. The band was formed in April 2000 in Genoa and released their first–though I haven’t got the chance to hear it–studio album Leading Far from a Mistake in 2003. Judging from the songs credits, at least for this album, the band’s mastermind is their bassists :) Fabio Grem. To tell you the truth, I didn’t like this CD at first and it took me some time to begin to like this recording. Sadly, this happens more often lately.

Transatlantic flies again - yeah!

Well, according to InsideOut prog super-band Transatlantic begun work on their new, third, studio album. If all is good the album should see the daylight before the year ends. Say what you want, but I do like Transatlantic and I’m waiting impatiently for their new release.

Progressive Nation 2009

Well, well, well. Now would you now, Progressive Nation 2009 Europe features far better bands than the North American one. These are:

I’ve already mentioned Unexpect here and I’m really looking forward to seeing them live. Dream Theater and Opeth are the kind of bands that need no further introduction. As for the Bigelf, I’ve heard their recording some time ago and I think it’ll be interesting to see them perform live as well.

Man, I haven’t been so much excited about a gig for years. Łuczniczka Hall in Bydgoszcz, Poland is where I’ll be on September 30th.
